At Nio Teas, every matcha is graded Latte, Entry, Premium or Superior. Premium Grade is our refined ceremonial tier: first-harvest leaf (ichibancha), shaded for an extended period before picking, with only the finest young leaves selected. It brings very high umami, very low bitterness and minimal astringency, and it is smooth enough for koicha, the thick preparation, as well as usucha.

The Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako sits in Premium Grade because of how it drinks. Grown in Yame, Okumidori develops a creamy body with subtle florals and a cocoa-like aroma, and this matcha is creamy and sweet, with a thick, velvety body and a smooth, mellow finish.

The Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako is made from the Okumidori cultivar, a Japanese tea variety celebrated for its balanced sweetness, rich umami, and vibrant color.

Okumidori is known for producing teas with deep vegetal notes, smooth textures, and a gentle sweetness. When grown in Yame’s rich soils, it develops a creamy body with subtle floral hints and a cocoa-like aroma. This cultivar is ideal for creating a matcha that feels both luxurious and comforting, mellow yet complex, with a soft, velvety finish.

Whisked thin as usucha, 2 g of matcha makes one bowl.

  1. Soak the bamboo whisk — 2–3 minutes before first use, 30–60 seconds for daily use.
  2. Sift 2 g (1 tsp) of matcha, about 2 chashaku scoops, into your bowl.
  3. Heat water to 70°C / 160°F.
  4. Add 10 ml (1 tbsp) of water and work it into a smooth paste with no clumps.
  5. Add the rest of the water — 80 ml / ⅓ cup in total.
  6. Whisk in quick W motions for 15–30 seconds.
  7. Enjoy your matcha, then rinse the whisk, let it air-dry and store it on its holder.

The Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako is produced in Yame, Fukuoka Prefecture, a region famous for its deep, full-bodied green teas. The area’s misty valleys and nutrient-rich volcanic soils create the ideal environment for cultivating the shaded leaves used in premium matcha.

Our sourcing partner Miyako plays a crucial role in bringing this exceptional matcha to life. While Miyako is not a farmer, he is one of our most trusted tea partners in Japan. Working directly with local producers, he tests, verifies, and selects the finest pesticide-free matchas that meet our strict quality standards. For privacy reasons, we do not disclose the farms involved. But rest assured, each tea is tested for purity and chosen for its outstanding balance and flavor.

The Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako is sourced from Yame, Fukuoka Prefecture, an area known for its thick, shaded tea leaves and exceptionally high-quality matcha production. Why Organic Matcha Fields Make a Difference

Tea plants absorb everything from the soil, making pesticide-free farming especially important. The farmers we work with have found a way to grow delicious tea without harming the natural ecosystem.

Nio teas has been my favourite place to purchase good quality teas for a while now, and still they never disappoint me. Their teas are excellent quality, however, I’d like to give more attention to customer service - Nio team has been very kind and helpful each time I had any sort of problem. Their customer service never disappoints, they are very attentive and quick in responding to any queries, hence why I’ve been a loyal customer for a while now.

FAQ

Before you order

Shipping is free once your order passes the threshold for your country — USD 54.99 · EUR 54.99 · GBP 44.99 · CHF 49.99 · CAD 74.99 · DKK 399 · SEK 599 · PLN 229 · CZK 1,290. Everywhere else it's the equivalent of USD 54.99, converted automatically. Below the threshold a flat rate applies, always shown at checkout before you pay.

We ship from warehouses in the US, the EU and Japan — whichever is closest to you. US and EU orders arrive in 4–12 business days; the handful of countries served from Japan take around 10. Business days count from dispatch rather than from when you order, and exclude weekends and public holidays. You'll get a tracking number by email the moment your parcel leaves the warehouse.

We only buy from fields grown without pesticides or chemicals. We ask each farmer directly how they manage their land, visit the plantation and processing facility ourselves, taste every harvest before committing, and check that the biodiversity around the fields is alive. Small family farms don't always carry paperwork — so we verify it in person instead.

Japanese green tea covers an enormous range, and choosing online isn't easy. If you've tried yours and it isn't for you, email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a line on what you didn't enjoy. We'll send a different tea of equal or lower value, free. Nothing to post back — keep it, share it, or try brewing it cooler. Once per order.

Email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a photo. We'll approve it, cover the return postage with a prepaid label or a reimbursement, and refund you — no restocking fee. Refunds go to your original payment method within 2 business days of the return reaching us; your bank may take another 5–20 to show it.

Unopened items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days. Tea is sealed for hygiene, so opened packs can't come back — but the swap above covers exactly that situation. Return postage is yours unless the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect.

Orders to the US and EU ship domestically from our local warehouse, so there's no customs charge and no duty. A small number of destinations are served from our Japan warehouse, where your own customs authority may apply import duty, VAT or a carrier handling fee on delivery. Those are set by your country, not by us. Ask before you order and we'll help you check.

My wife and I are new to matcha, and we were delighted when we found the Nios website. The Tasting Notes helped us choose the Yame Okumidori Miyakoand Kiwami Sakamoto matchas. Nios was generous in gifting to us a packet of Oishi Ceremonial Saemidori. The Tasting Notes did its work and we are enjoying all three.

Customer photo review of Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako

I've really enjoyed my first experience of Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako. The colour is a beautiful deep jade green and the texture incredibly smooth, creamy and velvety. Flavour is very well rounded with a pleasant bitter-sweet reminiscent of dark chocolate with a toasty aroma of cocoa. This is probably my favourite of the 3 matcha teas I have purchased from Nio Teas so far.

Excellent matcha, very smooth, no bitterness or acidity, easy to make thick foam.

This matcha is so comforting! Drinking it feels like a warm hug. It doesn't have any distinct outliers in flavour, but it's well rounded and personally I would describe it as a deep comforting earthy flavour. Love this one, added to my faves!

Customer video review of Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako

Notes of cocoa + toasted nuttiness that are followed by a slight tang + sharpness in the back of the throat. astringency is minimal but present, while bitterness is almost non-existent. i also located subtle umami notes throughout with an overall velvety texture, making this quite enjoyable alone.

This yame matcha is smooth, rich & velvety and no acidity. this was yummy without a sweetener but just a touch of agave in a latte smooths it out even more

Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako

This matcha was a bit bitter and I was looking for a full-bodied, naturally sweet matcha.

Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako

It's a nice, mild matcha. Not very complex, and I find the individual notes are hard to pick out -- it just tastes like matcha (and that's not a bad thing). Not everything has to be complicated.

Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako

Made an usucha out of this matcha, nothing added. Delicious mild cocoa note shines through as described on the website. Mouthfeel smooth and creamy. Just recently started drinking matcha, this is one of my favorites that I’ve tried so far.

Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako

Good texture and deep green color but less umami and slightly more astringency than I expected from the flavor profile on the site. It just wasn't what I was hoping for.

Matcha Yame Okumidori Miyako

The matcha of my dreams! Slightly toasty, leafy, green, and perfect. Immediately ordered 6 more to store in my freezer. I cannot get enough of this one.
