What is matcha latte powder?
Matcha latte powder is matcha specifically intended to be used in matcha lattes. When you are mixing matcha directly into water, you need the powder to be very smooth but when you are making matcha lattes, you actually want this more intense flavor profile so you can taste it through the oatmilk. Matcha green tea latte powder also has the benefit of being much more affordable, which is important because you tend to use a lot when you are making matcha lattes. You can find this matcha for just a fraction of the price, and it is a nice, affordable way to begin your journey into the world of Japanese green tea.
All our matcha latte powder is produced by reputable Japanese farmers
We source all of our Japanese green teas from small producers all around Japan. It has been such a privilege to work with these talented tea farmers, and we have built meaningful relationships with them over the years. They devote lots of time, hard work and ingenuity towards the production of green tea and it really shows in the end result. Even if you are using matcha powder for lattes, it is still important that you go for pesticide free tea. When you are drinking matcha, you are consuming the entire leaf, rather than just an extraction of it. This means that you get higher levels of everything contained within the tea leaf itself, including pesticides. For this reason, it is especially important to go for pesticide free tea when it comes to matcha.
Our matcha green tea latte powder is 100% pesticide free
As we mentioned before, it is particularly important to go pesticide free when you are selecting matcha powder. This even applies to matcha latte powder because even though you are mixing the powder with other ingredients, you are still consuming the entire leaf, and everything contained within it. If you are conscious about consuming chemicals, you should avoid the conventionally grown teas, particularly when it comes to powdered tea. In addition to the health aspect, we have also tried to address some environmental concerns of the tea industry by sourcing only pesticide free.
Why is matcha green tea latte powder more affordable than ceremonial matcha?
There are certain steps in the production process that are skipped when making lower grade matcha teas. The tea plant may not be shaded for as long, the older leaves are selected to make the tea or the stems of the plant will be ground up alongside the leaves. We prefer to get the matcha latte powder from later harvests. While later harvests will produce more bitter and less nutrient dense matcha tea, on balance it is some of the best matcha powder for lattes.
Differences in texture and taste of matcha latte powder compared to other types of matcha
When compared to premium matcha, matcha powder for lattes can be a bit more bitter and it can take on a more dull green color. The texture of the matcha is not quite as rich as the ceremonial grade, and it may be harder to produce a foam on top of the tea. This would be a problem if you are drinking the tea plain, but when it comes to the best matcha powder for latte, the latte grade matcha can’t be beat!
Which grade of matcha powder should you use for a latte?
If you use the premium ceremonial grade matcha for a latte, there are two things that might happen. First, you will spend lots of money on your matcha lattes, as the premium matcha can cost over $1 per gram. Also, you may notice that the flavor of the matcha itself is lost in the latte. For these reasons, you may find that the latte grade matcha is the best matcha powder for lattes and it is a good way to add matcha to your daily routine.
What does matcha latte powder taste like?
The flavor of matcha latte powder is strong on these slightly grassy or vegetable notes. These are actually a perfect complement to milk and sugar, which is why matcha lattes taste so good! If you are drinking premium, ceremonial grade matcha, you will notice more of this smooth and “milky” taste characteristic, with less of these bitter notes.

-
Step 1 - Sift your matcha powder for latte
Sift 2 grams of matcha latte powder into a bowl or glass (this step is important if you don’t want clumps in your matcha)
-
Step 2 - Pour a tiny bit of warm water
Add in about 20 millileters of water, just enough to mix the matcha powder into a paste
-
Step 3 - Mix your matcha latte powder to make Koicha
Mix the matcha latte powder into a nice smooth paste and do your best to break up the clumps
-
Step 4 - Prepare a cup of your favourite plant milk
Add in 1 cup of your favorite plant milk. It’s best to preheat the milk in a microwave or in a pan if you are making a warm matcha latte
-
Step 5 - Mix the matcha and plant based milk
Combine the matcha paste with the oatmilk until it is mixed in evenly
-
Step 6 - Enjoy your matcha latte
If you are making a warm matcha latte, you can serve your tea now! If you are making an iced matcha latte, you can add in your matcha ice cubes
Which plant milk should you use with your matcha green tea latte?
One reason we don’t use dairy milk in our matcha lattes is because the casein can decrease the effectiveness of the antioxidants. This being said, there are still so many options when it comes to matcha lattes. Oatmilk is a clear favorite when it comes to matcha lattes, but there are many delicious plant milks to choose from like soymilk, almond milk and coconut milk. Try a few and see which one you like most!
What is the best matcha powder for latte?
The best matcha powder for latte would have to be the latte grade matcha produced by Mr. Masuda. Because this tea is made from a later harvest, it has a slightly stronger taste but it still maintains a bright green color, indicating that it is produced from good leaf material.
Does matcha latte powder have caffeine?
Matcha latte powder does have caffeine, but only about half the caffeine compared to premium ceremonial grade matcha. If you use 2 grams to prepare your matcha tea, you end up with 34 mg of caffeine per cup. This is around half the caffeine of a strong cup of coffee, so if you are trying to limit your dependence on caffeine, you can switch out your morning coffee for a morning latte.
The reason why matcha green tea latte powder has less caffeine than premium ceremonial grade matcha has to do with the production process. Everything from the shading of the plants to the removal of the stems can increase the caffeine content of the powder, and because a lot of these steps are skipped in the production of matcha green tea latte powder, this tea will have a lot less caffeine.
