At Nio Teas, every matcha is graded Latte, Entry, Premium or Superior. Premium Grade is our refined ceremonial tier: first-harvest leaf (ichibancha), shaded for an extended period before picking, with only the finest young leaves selected. It brings very high umami, very low bitterness and minimal astringency, and it is smooth enough for koicha, the thick preparation, as well as usucha.
The Gokou Matcha Koiai sits in Premium Grade because of how it drinks. The Gokou cultivar is prized for its strong savoury umami, and this matcha is bold and full-bodied, with a deep savoury kick balanced by a smooth sweetness and just a whisper of astringency in the finish.
Cultivar: GokouTea variety
As the name would suggest, the Gokou Matcha Koiai is made from the Gokou matcha cultivar. This cultivar is well sought after for it’s unique and powerful flavor.
Gokou matcha is highly prized for its strong savory or “umami” flavor profile. This is the flavor profile a lot of tea drinkers are looking for in a matcha, and it is perfectly captured here.
Preparation & Servings40 g = 20 servings · 80 g = 40 servings
Whisked thin as usucha, 2 g of matcha makes one bowl.
Soak the bamboo whisk — 2–3 minutes before first use, 30–60 seconds for daily use.
Sift 2 g (1 tsp) of matcha, about 2 chashaku scoops, into your bowl.
Heat water to 70°C / 160°F.
Add 10 ml (1 tbsp) of water and work it into a smooth paste with no clumps.
Add the rest of the water — 80 ml / ⅓ cup in total.
Whisk in quick W motions for 15–30 seconds.
Enjoy your matcha, then rinse the whisk, let it air-dry and store it on its holder.
Tea Artisan: OsadaさんShizuoka
The Osada family has been cultivating tea in Shizuoka for generations. They have successfully transformed their small, family-run tea farm into a medium-sized enterprise that provides employment opportunities to many people in the surrounding area.
Despite producing a higher quantity of tea, they continue to uphold their commitment to quality. They achieve this by partnering with small producers located in the mountains. By doing this, they are able to combine the attention to detail of a small tea field with the experience and resources of a larger operation. To improve quality further, they relocated their production facility to the mountains, closer to the source of their tea.
Origin: ShizuokaJapan
The Gokou Matcha Koiai is produced in the organic village of Isagawa, which is a term used to refer to a group of tea farmers who have pledged to grow their tea without the use of harmful pesticides or chemicals.
When it comes to tea cultivation, it's not just enough to ensure that one's own fields are free from pesticides and chemicals. It's equally important to ensure that the surrounding lands are also free from these harmful substances. This is why it's crucial for the farmers of Isagawa to collaborate and ensure that all their tea fields are entirely organic.

Family tea growers in Shizuoka for generations.
Farmer: Osadaさん
The Osada family has been growing tea in Shizuoka for generations, turning a small family farm into a medium-sized business that employs many people from the surrounding area. They keep quality high by working with small producers in the mountains, and moved their production facility up into the mountains to be closer to the source.
Why Organic Matcha Fields Make a Difference
Tea plants absorb everything from the soil, making pesticide-free farming especially important. The farmers we work with have found a way to grow delicious tea without harming the natural ecosystem.
Nio teas has been my favourite place to purchase good quality teas for a while now, and still they never disappoint me. Their teas are excellent quality, however, I’d like to give more attention to customer service - Nio team has been very kind and helpful each time I had any sort of problem. Their customer service never disappoints, they are very attentive and quick in responding to any queries, hence why I’ve been a loyal customer for a while now.

We ship from warehouses in the US, the EU and Japan — whichever is closest to you. US and EU orders arrive in 4–12 business days; the handful of countries served from Japan take around 10. Business days count from dispatch rather than from when you order, and exclude weekends and public holidays. You'll get a tracking number by email the moment your parcel leaves the warehouse.
We only buy from fields grown without pesticides or chemicals. We ask each farmer directly how they manage their land, visit the plantation and processing facility ourselves, taste every harvest before committing, and check that the biodiversity around the fields is alive. Small family farms don't always carry paperwork — so we verify it in person instead.
Japanese green tea covers an enormous range, and choosing online isn't easy. If you've tried yours and it isn't for you, email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a line on what you didn't enjoy. We'll send a different tea of equal or lower value, free. Nothing to post back — keep it, share it, or try brewing it cooler. Once per order.
Email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a photo. We'll approve it, cover the return postage with a prepaid label or a reimbursement, and refund you — no restocking fee. Refunds go to your original payment method within 2 business days of the return reaching us; your bank may take another 5–20 to show it.
Unopened items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days. Tea is sealed for hygiene, so opened packs can't come back — but the swap above covers exactly that situation. Return postage is yours unless the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect.
Orders to the US and EU ship domestically from our local warehouse, so there's no customs charge and no duty. A small number of destinations are served from our Japan warehouse, where your own customs authority may apply import duty, VAT or a carrier handling fee on delivery. Those are set by your country, not by us. Ask before you order and we'll help you check.

Overall rating: 4.8 / 5 from 85 reviews.
A very smooth, rounded creamy matcha. Aroma is slightly salty and savoury a little like cereal or corn snacks. Flavour overall is mild with some sea vegetal flavours. Probably more suited to latte's as a little too bland for my taste
a good quality, equally balanced ceremonial matcha to go for if you're not looking for something fancy.
I chose the matcha due tu the "thickness" level, but do not sense a big difference to other matchas. But the foamyness is really good and holds long.
Compared to the other matcha teas I've had, this one really stands out for the bold flavor. It can be a little bit much at times but most mornings I really enjoy it. I'll be ordering this again for sure!
I really love this tea particularly in the morning. I'm coming from the world of coffee so it takes a lot of flavor and caffeine to satisfy me but this one does the trick!
I know we're supposed to drink this plain but I find it really works well in lattes! The rich flavor pairs great with the milk and adds a little spice to my morning matcha latte
I went for the matcha sampler a few weeks ago and the koiai ended up being my favorite so I ordered a couple of tins. Now I can't get enough of the stuff. This tea is great!
What a great tea! I love this tea every time of day, but mostly in the morning because of the high caffeine content. I think this could even help you replace coffee.
I don't normally like these super strong matchas but this one was special. The color was great, the foam was really strong and the flavor was nice and smooth.
I've been searching all over for this flavor! A lot the matchas I have are a bit weak but this has such a strong flavor with not too much bitterness. Big fan!
This matcha is great to drink but its even fun just to prepare! I like practicing my whisking, and the foamy bowl of matcha is a nice reward for all the work!
Starting my mornings with a cup of Koiai matcha has become a daily ritual. I feel like it sets the tone for a great day ahead and I really enjoy drinking this tea.
Compared to other matcha teas I've tried, the color of this one is so much greener and more vibrant. I'm sure this has something to do with the freshness of the powder
This matcha not only tastes good but I also feel like it gives me a more balanced energy throughout the day. I used to get so impatient when I drank coffee but not anymore!
Thanks to the informative videos from Nio Teas, I've learned so much about matcha and how to prepare it. I finally got around to ordering this matcha and it did not dissappoint!
Just the color of this matcha tells you everything you need to know about it. So vibrant and green! The taste is smooth but I get a lot of strength from it as well.
My whole family loves the Koiai matcha now! My parents were able to give up their morning coffee, and even my kids enjoy the vibrant color and smooth flavor.
