Learn all the secrets of the Uji Matcha Chanoka Okumidori

If you're looking for a smooth and delicious matcha tea, you might want to try the Uji Matcha Chanoka Okumidori. This fine tea is carefully produced by none other than Mr. Takada himself in the town of Uji, located in the Kyoto prefecture of Japan. It's worth noting that when it comes to matcha tea, the Uji region has long been renowned for producing some of the world's highest quality teas, earning it a reputation as the best matcha-producing region in Japan.

Taste

Discover the results of Nio Teas’ 4 step tea tasting method

In order to properly assess the Uji Matcha Chanoka Okumidori, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of both its texture and flavor. Our assessment included a close examination of its dryness, sweetness, minerality, and acidity, as well as an evaluation of its thickness and richness, which is commonly referred to as mouthfeel. Given the unique qualities of matcha tea, we also made sure to pay close attention to the vegetal flavor profile, which is a defining characteristic of this type of tea.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

The color of this matcha from uji japan is a darker jade green color and its a smooth, fine powder.

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aroma coming off the powder of the matcha kyoto uji is mixed with the water is fresh and grassy, with a slight aroma of dark chocolate.

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

The Uji Matcha Chanoka Okumidori starts off with a smooth, steamed vegetable note, which later evolves into a slight grassiness. The matcha then begins to drift into a drier direction and it leaves the palate with an invigorating astringency. On the finish, there is almost a note of bitter dark chocolate.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

The Uji Matcha Chanoka Okumidori plays around more with these slightly drier and more grassy flavor profiles. It is still smooth and consistent, but the astringency leads to a more engaging drinking experience.

100% Organically grown and Ethically Sourced

At Nio, we prioritize collaborating closely with tea farmers who grow their plants using organic and pesticide-free methods. Our belief is that these practices not only enhance the tea's flavor but also contribute to the tea fields' long-term health and sustainability.

Based on our observations, tea farms that refrain from using pesticides and chemicals create a conducive environment for tea plants to flourish, as well as support a diverse range of plants and animals in the surrounding ecosystem.

Nio Teas Unique Organically grown sourcing process

  • Careful taste testing of each individual tea to find the best flavor
  • Communication with the farmers about the production methods to make sure no pesticides or chemicals are being used on the fields
  • In person farm visits to assess the quality of the tea field and the production facility
  • Making sure that the biodiversity around the tea fields is diverse and healthy
JAS Japanese Agriculture Standards logo

JAS Certified

The JAS logo that you will find on many of our products is short for Japanese Agriculture Standards. This label ensures that products are grown without pesticides or chemicals.

At Nio, we prefer to source tea from fields that are entirely free of pesticides and chemicals. In our selection process, we require larger tea farmers to provide us with the JAS label, which can be obtained through soil sampling and testing.

We also work with smaller tea farmers who may not have acquired certification yet, and we accept the "pesticide-free" label. Our aim is to provide opportunities to these farmers while still upholding our pledge to quality, pesticide-free farming.

Necessary teaware

If you're looking to experience the full richness and complexity of Uji Matcha Chanoka Okumidori, it's important to use the proper utensils to get the most out of your tea. Here are some essential accessories you'll need to prepare the perfect cup:

  • A Matcha Bowl: A traditional matcha bowl, or "chawan," is wide and shallow, with plenty of room to whisk the matcha powder and hot water into a frothy, creamy texture.
  • A Bamboo Whisk: The bamboo whisk, or "chasen," is a critical tool for achieving the desired consistency in your matcha. The delicate tines of the whisk create tiny bubbles that blend the matcha powder and water together, giving the tea its characteristic frothy texture.
  • A Chashaku: A bamboo scoop, or "chashaku," is used to measure out the perfect amount of matcha powder for each cup. It ensures that you use the correct amount of tea, so you can enjoy the full depth of flavor in each sip.
  • A Sifter: A small sieve, or "furui," is used to sift the matcha powder before whisking it with water. Sifting removes any lumps or clumps, creating a smooth and even texture.

Takada Masahiro farm in japan

Location of production and farmer

Information about the farm

We source this tea from Takada Masahiro, a farmer based in Uji, who runs his family business at Chanoka. The legacy of Chanoka dates back to 1900, when Masahiro's great grandfather established their first tea garden in Uji. Since then, their family has been passionately involved in cultivating and manufacturing some of the finest teas in Japan.

Sourced in Uji

Japan

This is a matcha from uji japan, the most famous region for Japanese green tea production. The specific green tea is cultivated on Mr. Chanoka's farm in Uji. Grown at an altitude of 400 meters, the matcha is shaded for 3 weeks before the harvest in order to develop a sweeter and more savory flavor.

Cultivar and tea plant variety

The Uji matcha is made from the Okumidori cultivar and based on customer feedback, this is consistently our most popular type of matcha at Nio Teas.

  • Okumidori

Okumidori is a tea variety renowned for its ability to produce smooth and full-bodied teas. It is often blended with other teas to reduce any bitterness, but it can also be enjoyed on its own. Despite being more challenging to produce, Okumidori is highly valued for its contribution to teas such as the Uji matcha, which has a finish completely free of bitterness.
