The origins of the Hojicha Cake

Hojicha cake is essentially just a cake flavored with hojicha, but before we get into how to make it, we should probably first discuss what hojicha is.

    What is Hojicha?

Hojicha is a unique type of Japanese green tea made from roasted tea leaves. After the tea leaves are harvested, they are steamed, rolled, dried and then they are fully roasted in either a large hot pan or a roasting machine.

During the roasting process, the color of the leaves change from green to brown and the flavor takes on these warmer notes of coffee, caramel and chocolate.

For most types of hojicha desserts, a finely ground hojicha powder is used. This powder is incredibly versatile and it can be combined into just about any recipe with enough creativity. In this particular recipe, we are going to baking a hojicha cake using our favorite hojicha powder.

In addition to baking with hojicha, it can also be added to everything from lattes to KitKat bars. In fact, we have a whole article called 👉 Why the Hojicha Kitkat just might Take Over the World

Why does the flavor work in a Hojicha Cake?

Hojicha cake is a type of sponge cake that incorporates the flavor of hojicha tea into the batter. Hojicha has a delicious yet earthy flavor, which combines well sweeter ingredients that can offset some of its darker undertones.

The resulting hojicha cake has a sweet taste, light and delicate texture, with a subtle hojicha taste that is not too overpowering. It is a perfect choice for those who love baking and eating cakes but are looking to try something a little more exotic and adventurous.
