This lightly steamed Asanoka sencha from Kagoshima has a beautiful flowery sweetness in the beginning, making room for a nice lingering umami in the aftertaste. You may notice a slightly roasted or cereal note in the background, but it is really quite subtle. In the second steeping, this cereal note comes out a little bit more, the tea becomes milder and the sweetness remains.
This sencha is a blended tea, meaning that it comes from multiple tea breeds or cultivars. Blending these teas together in perfect amounts has become an art in its own right. The main cultivar in this tea is the Asanoka, but it is balanced out by the Okumidori and the Yabukita. The flavors combine beautifully to produce a sencha that is fresh, sweet and umami with a slightly roasted note in the background.
