The Shizuoka Matcha Kakitsubata is a fresh and vibrant matcha made by the Osada family in Shizuoka. Its made with Yabukita, the most common matcha cultivar

Taste

Discover the results of Nio Teasโ€™ 4 step tea tasting method

To evaluate the Shizuoka Matcha, we evaluated the texture of the tea as well as the flavor. Does it produce a dryness, sweetness, minerality or acidity? Weโ€™ll also evaluate how thick or rich the consistency of the matcha is, otherwise known as mouthfeel. Finally, for matcha specifically, we like to take a look at the vegetal flavor of the tea, as this is a profile consistent across all types of matcha.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

The color of this Shizuoka Matcha is a darker olive green color and its sifted into a fine powder

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aroma of the Shizuoka Matcha Kakitsubata is salty and savory, with a hint of steamed veggies

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

The Shizuoka Matcha Kakitsubata draws you in with a sweet and slightly creamy tasting sensation which later transforms into a rich savory flavor. There is some of this fresh, citrusy acidity, but it is well balanced. The finish is smooth with a slight dryness.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

There is a strong physicality to the Shizuoka Matcha Kakitsubata, with a hint of acidity, a hint of dryness, some sweetness and a rather strong umami. All of these taste sensations are playing simultaneously, which lead to an engaging drinking experience.

100% Organically grown and Ethically Sourced

At Nio, we like to work with tea farmers who use organic farming practices and refrain from using harmful pesticides or chemicals. Our belief is that these natural farming methods not only improve the taste of the tea, but also contribute to the overall health and longevity of the tea plantations.

Through our observations, we have found that tea farms that adhere to these organic farming principles not only nurture strong and healthy tea plants, but also foster a thriving ecosystem that supports diverse flora and fauna.

Nio Teas Unique Organically grown sourcing process

JAS Japanese Agriculture Standards logo

JAS Certified

Youโ€™ll find the JAS logo on our Shizuoka Matcha Kakitsubata and various other teas we offer. This logo signifies compliance with Japanese Agriculture Standards, indicating that the crops were grown without the use of pesticides or chemicals.ย

At Nio, we prioritize tea plantations that are completely free of pesticides or chemicals when selecting suppliers. In collaborations with larger tea farmers, we require the JAS label, which can be obtained by conducting soil sampling and testing.ย

When we partner with smaller tea farmers who lack the resources for soil testing, we accept the "pesticide-free" designation to give them opportunities while still upholding our dedication to sustainability and excellence.

osada tea farm in japan

Location of production and farmer

Information about the farm

The Osada family has been growing tea in Shizuoka for multiple generations. After much success in the tea industry, they have turned their small family tea farm into a medium sized business, employing many people from the surrounding area.ย

Although they produce a larger volume of tea, they are still able to maintain high standards when it comes to quality. They accomplish this by working with small producers up in the mountains, giving them the attention to detail of a smaller organization. They moved their production facility up in the mountains to be closer to the source and the quality has improved because of it.ย

Sourced in Shizuoka

Japan

The Shizuoka Matcha Kakitsubata is grown in the organic village of Isagawa. This is a nickname given to a neighborhood of tea farmers that have made a commitment to growing tea without the use of pesticides or chemicals.ย

When cultivating tea plants, its not only enough to make sure your own tea fields are pesticide free, itโ€™s also important to make sure that chemicals arenโ€™t being used on the surrounding land as well. This is why its so important for the farmers of Isagawa to work together and ensure that their fields are completely organic.

Cultivar and tea plant variety

The Shizuoka Matcha Kakitsubata is made using the Yabukita cultivar, the most popular tea variety in Japan. This cultivar is known for having a lot of flavor and it is easier to grow.

  • Yabukita

The Yabukita cultivar works well in matcha because of its strong steamed vegetable flavor. It also provides a lot of that savory flavor, making this matcha a real treat for the real matcha fans out there
